Insulating your home properly has many benefits to both the environment and to lowering your energy bills. Both cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are ideal ways to help your home perform as cost effectively as it can. So what exactly is involved? Here, we try to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about loft and cavity wall insulation and insulating your house effectively.
Why do I need insulation?
In the most simple terms, to keep your house warm (and cool)! BRE completed a study that concluded 35% of a home's heat is lost through its walls and 25% through the roof/loft. By insulating your property correctly you could help retain up to 60% more heat. As an added benefit, in the warmer months, a well insulated house helps to keep the heat out, ensuring your home remains cooler and more comfortable in the warmer weather. Is it worth it?
Absolutely! With the energy price cap rising to £2,800 in October 2022, and possibly higher beyond, insulating your home effectively with our market leading EvoBead insulation could save you over £1,000 on your energy bills per year. Book a survey to find out how quickly our insulation pays for itself.
What insulation is right for me?
This will depend on the construction of your property. If it is constructed with cavity walls, which is by far the most common type of construction in the UK, our EvoBead insulation is the perfect fit. The Expanded Polystyrene Beads that we install are 98% air and are installed with glue. This ensures the perfect fill and no settlement, ensuring your property is insulated effectively and fully. All loft voids can be insulated with our Knauf insulation rolls. Speak to our team for advice or to book a free survey.
My property is already insulated so why does it feel cold?
Older, less advanced types of insulation can settle, become damp and degrade over time. This includes both woollen and fibrous types of wall insulation so it is possible that if the current insulation has been installed a long time ago (15+ years) it may no longer be effective. Our expert team of installers are qualified to remove this insulation and refill the cavity with our EPS beads to ensure a full and effective fill. What type of loft insulation is best?
Knauf loft insulation roll is the market leading product and has been tested and refined over many years, which is why they are Ignite Property Group's preferred supplier. Unfortunately, many people have been subject to scams, including spray foam loft insulation, which can make a property un-mortgageable. IIL’s loft insulation is recommended by both the BRE and building regulations, ensuring that our installation meets current standards and is best to both protect and insulate your property. What’s included in a survey?
Ignite Property Group's experienced surveyors will attend your property to assess the suitability for cavity wall and loft insulation. We will inspect the cavity, assess the amount of insulation required and ensure the property meets necessary ventilation requirements. Following a survey, you will receive a summary of our findings along with a quote for our market leading insulation installation. Book your survey and start the process to a better insulated home.
How easy is it to remove cavity wall insulation?
This will depend on the type of insulation used. The most common type of insulation that requires removal is the blown fibre/wool material. The removal process is fairly simple and involves us removing a few bricks from the bottom of the property, drilling our blow holes in specific patterns around the walls and using a large fan to suck out the existing insulation. This is supported by blown air from the top of the property to push the insulation downwards towards the extraction machine. The blow holes are then used to blow in the new insulation to create a fully insulated cavity.
How much mess will it make in my property to have cavity wall or loft insulation installed?
Very little/none! Cavity wall insulation installation and extraction is all done from outside the property so there’s no disruption inside at all. Loft insulation is carried into the property in wrappers and unwrapped in the loft, leaving no mess. We then use these wrappers to cover the old insulation to take away for disposal, keeping any mess or disruption inside the property to a minimum.
What thickness of insulation is required for a loft?
This depends on the current condition and construction of the property. Current building regulations state that the U-Value (Heat loss value) through a loft must be a maximum of 0.16W/m2K, this is generally achieved by installing 250-270mm of Knauf loft insulation.
